$145 Worth of Items Donated to The Quinn House for $26.70!

Two days before Christmas, my husband, the kids and I dropped off some items to The Quinn House in Lawrenceville. Some of you may have heard me talk about the Quinn House before, but in case you haven't, it is now multi-task, non-profit outreach operation that assists hundreds of people in Gwinnett County and in other areas of the State. They have a Residential Program that provides housing for the homeless and offer a 40-day Drug and Alcohol Program to help individuals get back on their feet and re-enter society in a stable and productive way.

The men who live here are always so welcoming and willing to meet you at the car to help you unload. As several of the "regulars" greeted us, I couldn't help but be beyond grateful to God for His work in this ministry. They were beyond appreciative. What warms my heart the most about The Quinn House is that the men who live there would otherwise be homeless. But, what do they do? They drive around town in vans delivering food to others in need! They are an official operating food bank in Lawrenceville! They put together "care boxes" to needy Senior Citizens in the community!

To see the huge smiles on their faces when we unpacked 20 packages of Nestle Tollhouse Refrigerated cookie dough was priceless! They informed me that they would be enjoying lots of cookies for Christmas together. Here are the other things that "Clipping for a Cause" had the joy of donating that day:

24 bags of Steamfresh Vegetables
20 boxes of Betty Crocker Potatoes
7 tubes of Colgate toothpaste

Saved: $118.49
Spent: $26.70

As we approach 2011, think about where you feel God is calling you to serve. Even if it's not helping to stock the shelves of local food banks through couponing, you have a purpose. We all do. It's our responsibility to be obedient to the call, whatever it may be!

Best Ways to Donate for Free or Pocket Change: Publix (Starting 12/16)

It's so easy to get wrapped up in what all we need to accomplish during the holiday season. I do it myself. Making an appetizer for the neighborhood party, hosting a cookie swap, holiday baking with the family, frying a turkey for Christmas dinner, etc. But..what about the people that simply want reassurance that they will have something, anything to eat each day? I was humbled on my way to Kohls last weekend. I will admit that I was in a hurry, I was dreading getting out in the cold to return some items, it was crowded, it got me in a mood that was anything BUT the Christmas spirit..and there he was-a homeless man freezing to death by the stop sign in the shopping center sitting on the curb. God certainly meant for me to meet him that day. When I got out of my car to introduce myself, he gave the sweetest smile, and I barely noticed the fact that he only had a few teeth right at first. My entire trunk of the van was filled with all of the items that I would be dropping off at the food bank the next day. Hundreds of items. I think he could have done a cartwheel after I told him that "he had first pick."

If you know me personally, then you know that I am not sharing that story to "pat myself on the back." That's not it at all. In essence, its purpose is to merely bring attention to those in our community who could really use our help to just slow down and take a little time to make a difference.

Here's some ways you can do that at Publix this week. One of my favorites is the Colgate toothpaste for a quarter! This would be a great item to donate to the Villa Lodge stockings for children this year if you are local!

You can donate items by Wednesday, Dec. 15 in the Villa Lodge Ministry Box, Gibson Hallway, 3rd floor OR arrange for pick up with Heather Bonner.

Items needed are: wrapped hard candy, small toys, cards, play dough, action figures, personal care items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, hairbrushes, bubble bath, soap, lotions, etc.

Best Ways to Donate for Free or Pocket Change: Publix (Starting 12/9)

As always, there are some GREAT ways this week at Publix that you can donate to your local food bank or homeless shelter! I know times get so hectic especially around the holidays, but clipping a few extra coupons or giving up a couple of items in your stockpile this season is a wonderful way to give back. It's stories like the one below that serve as a daily reminder there are people just like you and I who could use our help:

This is a client story that came directly from the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op's website. If you would like to learn more about the co-op and how you can help, click here

"My name is Lyle Hankins and I came to the Southeast Gwinnett Co-Op 1 month ago. I was recently laid off by the mortgage industry and I needed help. I was told to call the Co-Op by the untied Way. When I came in I was down and out and not knowing where my next meal would come from or when I would be going back to work. The Co-Op was very generous and gave me food. They also gave me a networking contact of how to find a job. Today I am very proud to say thank you because now I have a job and I’m getting back on my feet! I wish you could effect more lives of those in need within our community. Without the Co-Op I was lost and not only did they meet my needs but they helped me out spiritually as well."

Well, I must admit that it will be hard to top last week's Publix purchases for the food bank! I just love my local store on Fence Road in Dacula. They are so helpful, and have been gracious enough to let us place one big order from their store rather than splitting up and going to 5-8 different stores! They have the friendliest staff, and I actually drive further just so I can shop there! So..last week we donated 99 bags of Vigo Rice (each bag was free plus overage), 66 jars of Beech-Nut Baby Food, and 45 cans of Hunt's tomatoes all for just the cost of TAX! It was the best feeling in the whole world, especially after delivering to the Lawrenceville Co-op and witnessing the long line wrapped around the building with people standing in the cold. Target Shorts Customers on Coupons, Lawsuit Says

It didn't take long after I started couponing to realize that there are some stores that couldn't be more cooperative and others that you leave with a pounding headache; never wanting to return. Target has always been one of my favorite retailers, but I must say that especially since the formation of "Clipping for a Cause," their associates have done very little to impress (us) when using coupons, and we are made to feel like a hassle and inconvenience. Apparently, we aren't the only ones. The below post is a newspaper article that was just published in the Birmingham News on Thursday! It outlines how Target has missed the boat on how to properly train their employees on coupon policies and there is an overall lack of knowledge in reimbursing the full face value of a manufacturer's coupon. I hate to get on a soap box, but honestly I know I am not alone in saying that we have limited our visits to Target because of this. We would rather go to a store where we feel welcome and can checkout with ease instead of having to continuously call a store manager over to fix yet another problem.

ARTICLE:
A Jefferson County woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Target Corporation, claiming two area stores did not give her full credit for manfacturers' coupons she presented for purchases of baby wipes, frozen meals and baby food in September.

Target's treatment of manufacturers' coupons -- not giving full value for the coupons -- has been the subject of news stories since this summer.

Amy Reilly, spokeswoman for the Minnesota-based store chain, told The Birmingham News on Thursday that the chain had implemented a systemwide fix for Target stores nationwide to address the manufacturers' coupon issue. "We certainly regret the inconvenience to guests," she said.

Target often blames glitches in its computer system to account for the company-wide behavior "but they never correct these glitches," according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Birmingham on behalf of Michelle Norris against Target Corp. and Target Stores Inc., seeks class action status in order to represent others nationwide who presented a valid manufacturer's coupon for merchandise since Nov. 1, 2004.

A phone message to the Montgomery attorney who filed the lawsuit, W. Daniel "Dee" Miles, III, was not returned Thursday afternoon.

According to the lawsuit, Norris was shopping Sept. 8 at the Target on U.S. 280 when she presented a manufacturer's coupon she had gotten online for Huggies brand baby wipes. The coupon stated she could buy three packages of the wipes and get $2.50 off the purchase price.

The lawsuit claims Norris instead received a credit of $2.39 for the coupon.

Later that same day, Norris went to the Target store in Hoover and bought three other packages of the same baby wipes with an identical coupon and again received a $2.39 credit, according to the lawsuit.

On Sept. 21, Norris presented at a Target store a Heinz North America coupon to save $4 off any 10 Weight Watchers products, the lawsuit claims. The store deducted $1.80 for the coupon. On that same visit, a $1 coupon Norris presented for buying seven Earth's Best Baby Food Jars was credited with 57 cents, according to the lawsuit.

All the coupons reimburse the stores the face value of the coupon, plus 8 cents for handling the redemption, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims that Target receives a "monetary windfall" from its coupon policy and discourages the use of coupons.

Target, the lawsuit claims "is benefiting by and through the manipulation of paying the consumer less than the value of the coupon, while having the ability to redeem the coupon with the manufacturer for full face value in addition to the handling fee."

The lawsuit states a Minnesota television station reported on the issue in August.

The lawsuit claims breach of contract, unjust enrichment, conversion, and fraud.

Besides seeking class-action status, the lawsuit, among other things, seeks an unspecified amount of money for compensatory and punitive damages, creation of a trust, and costs incurred on the lawsuit.

Also on Tuesday, a Los Angeles County, Calif., woman filed a class-action lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming that she did not get full credit for manufacturers' coupons for baby products at Target.

One Person CAN Make a Difference!!!

A few months ago, I got the opportunity to meet Kaylee. She came to a Clipping for a Cause meeting to find out more about how to start her own chapter at her church. She fit right on in with us, in fact, we all wished after she left that she lived closer so she could join us weekly! All of us especially got a laugh when we sat down to clip coupons and saw her whip out her very own pair from her pocket! BYOS (bring your own scissors!) we all joked!!

Anyway, since then, her church has kind of had a slow start to beginning the ministry. Instead of getting discouraged, Kaylee has used it as an opportunity to continue to be diligent in following her personal calling to help others in the community. Recently, she decided to individually organize a mobile food drive in her loft apartment complex. She was able to collect 502 total items for her local food pantry! She didn't stop there, however, and did a separate one at work to add over 150 items to the list!

Kaylee is an inspiration to all of us. No, 650 items are not going to come close to feeding all of the people right here in our own country who are hungry. However, it is 650 more items than the food bank shelves would have had if it weren't for Kaylee's effort.

Harris Teeter Super Doubles!

If you are a Harris Teeter shopper (man, we really need one here in Atlanta!!) then you will want to check out Emily's list of additional items she found on the super doubles list this week! Emily heads up the Clipping for a Cause team in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has created a great blog that locals can especially learn a lot from when it comes to donating to people in need for little to nothing in that area! Click here for her list. Some of my faves were FREE Gain Dish Liquid, FREE Toilet Bowl Cleaner, FREE pancake mix and FREE Yakisoba Noodles (a staple at all food banks!) Thanks Emily!

Libby's Virtual Canned Food Drive!

Now this I had to share with you! Libby's has organized an unbelievable effort called the "Virtual Canned Food Drive." This year, they have partnered with Feeding America to help those who are less fortunate. The part that caught my eye about this effort is: "Teams that raise $1,500 or more for Feeding America will get their pantries stocked with a year’s supply of canned vegetables from Libby’s." When you think about it, even if just you and a few of your friends got together and formed a team and asked those closest to you to donate $5 here, or $10 here, I bet you could raise $1500 in no time! You can read the full article here, but the following info was taken straight from the Libby's website!

This year, Libby’s wants you to help families in need get back to the table through the Virtual Canned Food Drive supporting Feeding America.

At Libby’s Fruits and Vegetables, we passionately believe that every capable family should help those less fortunate. This is why we partnered with Feeding America for the second year in a row to empower you, your family and your community to give back to Americans who are food insecure.

The online food drive encourages families and friends to form teams and engage their communities to support them. Teams that raise $1,500 or more for Feeding America will get their pantries stocked with a year’s supply of canned vegetables from Libby’s. Individuals are also welcome to either form teams or simply donate.

In addition, Libby’s Fruits and Vegetables will match up to $40,000 of donations raised between now and Dec. 13, 2010, which will help provide 525,000 meals for families in need! As a thank-you, Libby’s will give every person who contributes to the Virtual Canned Food Drive a coupon for 50 cents off two cans of Libby’s Vegetables.

Every five dollars donated helps provide 35 meals for families struggling with hunger. This is a cause we hope everyone will stand behind!

Hamilton Mill UMC "Clipping for a Cause" Chapter: Spent $1.30, Saved $22.15!

If you are a "Clipping for a Cause" follower, then you are aware that several new chapters of this ministry are popping up right here in Georgia as well as nationwide! One of these, led by Erin C., has recently started up at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church. I am so proud of Erin and her team and amazed at what a great start they have gotten off to in such a short amount of time! She also has a separate blog which includes weekly updates and details about their effort to help the needy in their community. Please click here to visit it when you have a chance!

This week, she shows us how only $1.30 can purchase over $20 worth of groceries for the local food pantry! The following came straight from her website:

Here is what my family picked up this week at Publix for The Pantry with coupons:

*2 Ronzoni Healthy Harvest boxes of pasta
*5 Ronzoni Garden Delight boxes of pasta
*1 Taco Bell kit
*7 one-pound bags of Mahatma rice

If you were to purchase these items without sales & coupons, you would pay $22.15.

With sales and coupons, we only paid $1.30!!

Saved: $5,303.70, Spent $677.05: Most Recent Stats 8 Months In!

After our "Clipping for a Cause" meeting tonight at First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville, I decided to spend some time organizing all of our most recent receipts and totaling up our statistics over the past 8 months. I have to admit I had one of those, teary-eyed-jaw-dropping-grateful-humbling kinda moments when I figured out the following:

We have saved $5,303.70
We have spent $677.05 out of pocket
We have donated close to 8,000 items to local people in need

That equals a savings over the course of 8 months of 88.7%

Giveaway! 10 Gain Dish Liquid Coupons!

Crystal the Coupon Momma who also runs Coupon Beat(a coupon clipping service) has offered to give one lucky reader 10 coupons for $1/1 Gain Dish Liquid! Thanks Crystal!

Spent $0.28, Saved $110.52 at Publix Today!!!

Here is what was purchased for only $0.28 for the local co-op! (Well, everything except for the shrimp that is!) Before I started couponing to the extreme back in December of last year, I would have thought that this was impossible. Now, visualizing how a quarter and three pennies can benefit those in need, my hope is that you, too, may be inspired to start "Clipping for a Cause!"

(10) Vivarin @ $3.19
USED: (5) $5/2 Publix Green Advantage Flyer Coupons
(10) $2/1 GlaxoSmithKline Products 10/10/2010 RP Insert
TOTAL: -$13.10

(16) Quaker Oats Oatmeal @ $1.27
USED: (16) $1/1 Quaker Oats Oatmeal coupons from 8/29/10 Red Plum
TOTAL: $4.40

(1) Bag of Medium Shrimp @ $8.99

Also Used: $5/$25 Purchase Rite Aid Competitor Coupon (no longer available)

Total Spent: $0.28
Total Saved: $110.52

**Note: These coupons were all donated to Clipping for a Cause by First United Methodist Church of Lawrenceville. We always call Publix a week ahead of time with our "order" so we don't wipe any shelves off! It's important to be mindful of other shoppers!

More Free Mahatma Rice!!

Hopefully you grabbed several papers over the weekend! In the Red Plum coupon insert, there was another $0.50/1 Mahatma Rice coupon!!! If your store doubles coupons, this means you can actually score FREE rice! Not only is this a great item for you and your family to stock up on, but it's a great way to donate to others in need for nothing out of pocket! Since the coupons reads "off any" that means you can use this on the smaller, skinny bags which are usually $0.89 (so you'd get a little overage too!!) The short grain is priced at $0.99, and the long grain at my Publix is around $1.19! I am not sure how Kroger or others grocers have this priced, so feel free to leave a comment below with that info!

"It's Spooky to Be Hungry" One Day Food Drive!

If you are local and would like to help stock the shelves of the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op, this one is for you!

There will be a one day food drive to benefit the SE Gwinnett Co-Op on October 30th. A grocery bag size donation is asked from families. Donations accepted at Cannon Church all day Saturday.

New "Clipping for a Cause" Chapter @ Hamilton Mill UMC!

Congratulations to Erin C. and her team at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church! They have started up a new "Clipping for a Cause" ministry that within days, has been more than successful! In November, Erin will be speaking at a seminar that will educate others on how to clip coupons to help the needy in the community. She also has started a blog about this effort entitled, "Clip for the Pantry." You can check it out here when you have a chance! This particular chapter will concentrate on stocking the shelves at "The Pantry" which is sponsored by Hamilton Mill United Methodist! Already, she has illustrated how a little over $3 can purchase nearly $40 worth of groceries! Way to go Erin!

Got Toothpaste?!

How about 28 tubes of Crest for $0.83 total!!!!!! Last Wednesday, at Clipping for a Cause, we clipped 28 Crest coupons for $0.50/1 from the October P & G. Combined with the 10/$10 sale currently going on at Kroger for the Crest, that made each tube FREE! The only thing due was $0.83 in tax! (No worries, Kroger must have had 100+ of these on the shelf, and we are always mindful of other shoppers who may be wanting the same item!)

Neighborhood Teams Up to form "Clipping for a Cause!"

Thanks to Lee C. for sending me a copy of the "Ashbury Exchange," which is her neighborhood newsletter! I thought I would share this with you, as Lee is not only a local member of "Clipping for a Cause," but she has taken things a step further and gotten her neighbors involved in the effort! For those of you who are not close to Atlanta, but would still like to get involved in your own way but aren't quite sure how, please take the time to read this excerpt taken from the newsletter! Thanks Lee for everything you are doing!

"Ashbury Neighbors Help Fight Hunger"
Did you know that something you might otherwise throw in the trash or put in your recycling bin can help feed those in need? Clipping for a Cause (a ministry of Lawrenceville First UMC) is transforming coupons into cheap (or free) items such as milk, yogurt, canned goods, rice, cereal, pasta, shampoo, deodorant, razors and lots more! All these items are then donated to local non-profits.
If you have coupon inserts from the newspaper you're not using, please consider donating them to Clipping for a Cause. Just drop them off in the box on the front porch at ******** A huge thank you to our neighbors who are already donating their coupons! To

Febreze Set & Refresh: At Least $0.50 Overage this Week at Publix!

For those of you who like to get paid to grocery shop (who doesn't!?) this deal is for you!! Not only will your house be smelling great, but it will be ten times better knowing that you earned money in your pocket just by tossing a few Set & Refreshes in the buggy! Check out the following deal this week at Publix! If you have the $3/5 P&G products listed also, you can score even more overage to spend on something else on your list (if your store allows!) Keep in mind though, the P & G coupon expires TOMORROW! Thanks IHeartPublix!

Febreze Air Effects Air Refresher 9.7 oz can or Set & Refresh 5.5 ml pkg or 2-in-1 Noticeables Scented Oil Warmer 1 ct, 2/$5
-$3/1 Febreze Noticables Starter Kit or Warmer 9/26/2010 P&G Insert (exp 10/31/2010)
-$3/5 P&G products 9/26/2010 RP Insert (exp 10/16/2010)

**I should also update all of you on something different we have been trying with "Clipping for a Cause." As most of you know, after we clip coupons on Wednesday night for items that will be free or nearly free, we divide the coupons and send several shoppers to several stores so we don't wipe any shelves out at one particular store. We ALWAYS want to be mindful of other shoppers, so this has been the way we've done it from day one. However, my most favorite Publix of all time in Dacula on Fence Road has now set up a way to make life easier on everyone involved! We meet and clip on Wednesday nights and then on Thursday, we call the store with our "order." That's right!! Keep in mind if you have multiple coupons of one particular item, rather than wiping off the shelves, you can call around the first day of the sale and Publix will put in a special order for your items and have it ready for you in a few days!! So..with the Febreze deal, we are ordering 80+ which will be $40+ in overage! This is a win win..your store gets to enter in the extra sales, you aren't wiping the shelves for anyone else coming behind you, and you get to purchase all of the items in one place rather than "store hopping!"
